Assessment for Lifetime Extension

Retirement? Not so fast!

Depending on the site and the design standard, old wind turbines may have significant fatigue reserves that allow for a Lifetime Extension. We calculate how long a turbine may be continued to operate and together with our partner Deutsche Windtechnik Offshore und Consulting GmbH, we determine a fitting inspection and maintenance concept to ensure that the turbine can operate as long and as safely as possible. For small purses, we can also do a preliminary investigation whether a Life Time Extension is worthwhile or not.

Proof of Stability

Responding to changes flexibly

A proof of stability may be required before a wind turbine has reached the end of its design life time. If a new turbine is added to an existing wind farm, increased turbulence in the wake of the new turbine may require operating restrictions or even dismantling of a turbine. To avoid such measures, it must be shown that the new situation does not affect the proof of stability. Also, turbines that were dismantled and are to be re-installed at a different site may require a new proof of stability.

PE-Life

Lifetime calculation live!

There are tricky cases in which Lifetime Extension or a general proof of stability cannot be realized by the usual means. In those cases it is advantageous to replace the theoretical calculation models with practical measurements. We developed a load monitoring system that can assess the actual stress of the tower and foundation of the turbine with small technical effort. This way, we can monitor live how the turbine is utilized in terms of loads. By employing smart evaluation methods, we can also reconstruct the stresses in the history of the turbine as well as predict future stresses. This is especially interesting for the Lifetime Extension of newer types of wind turbines that usually have smaller reserves for continued operation than older types.

PE-Life actually consists of two systems: PE-Life and PE-Life smartPE-Life employs accelerometers as well as strain gauges to characterize and validate the calculation model for the loads. For this purpose, PE-Life is installed in a reference turbine. After model characterization, PE-Life smart is installed in other wind turbines of the same type in the wind farm. By using information from the reference turbine, PE-Life smart operates with acceleration measurements exclusively, making the measurement very inexpensive.
